The piece “Schoolgirl with Dog” is a continuation of my series of small bronzes “Playtime”, “Childsplay”, etc.
These smaller works are a commentary on the interrelationships and pecking order that occur in groups of children. Each figure has body language that portrays qualities such as confidence, mischievousness, shyness etc. At this small scale, rhythm is the most striking aspect visually. I have purposely worked in a childlike style, somewhat similar to the stick figures young children draw.
"School girl with Dog" differs in as much as it is an individual life-size figure. As such it portrays the more gentle, lyrical and reflective qualities of childhood, rather than any group dynamic, and relies on mass and surface texture for its impact.
