This sculpture is about keeping up appearances. He has a shark-fin strapped to his back, hoping to blend in with society's predators and stay on top-of-the-food-chain winners. Trying hard not to be seen as easy prey.
He symbolises us, when we feel like we constantly have to present ourselves as strong, street-smart and not to be messed with. We think that when we drop our guard we'll get eaten by the world.
Sometimes (like in his case) we see through each other's pretence. We recognise something of ourselves, and then suddenly there's more understanding, patience and kindness.
